PDFs: Gray Barker's "Saucerian" and "Saucerian Bulletin" UFO newsletters added to archive

Gray Barker was one of Ufology's many amusing tricksters. Widely acknowledged as a hoaxer that treated ufology as a joke, he created hoaxes with his friend Jim Moseley (editor of the “Saucer Smear” newsletter) and others.

Together, with Albert Bender, Gray Barker is (in)famous for promoting a story about strange "Men In Black" that supposedly interfered with UFO research.

Gray Barker’s “Saucerian” and “Saucerian Bulletin” newsletters are now in the public domain because of a failure to register a renewal of the copyright in these pre-1964 American periodicals – see my posting of some relevant resources regarding relevant copyright rules HERE.

CUFOS scanned most issues of these newsletters a few years ago.  Further to my current collaborative efforts with CUFOS (with particular thanks to George Eberhart and Mark Rodeghier), I have added searchable copies of those scans to my online archive and obtained a missing issue of the Saucerian Bulletin from the AFU in Sweden.

The issues now in my archive (in the folder for UFO newsletters from the USA) are:

USSR UFO PDFs: Another 4 sets of Soviet UFO newsletters - Digest UFOO i humanoid, Oko vselennoy - Vse pro UFO, Ot zvezd letyaschiye, Molodoy Communist - Zvezdy priblizilis

While I'm waiting for some news in relation to permission to upload another batch of Bigelow / NIDS material, I'll briefly turn back to UFO material from the USSR (and USA).

Thanks once again to the continued efforts of Ukrainian UFO researcher Igor Kalytyuk to obtain UFO material from across Eastern Europe and also relevant permissions, and the assistance of others in Ukraine and Russia (particularly George Fedorovskiy and Mikhail Gershtein), another 4 sets of UFO newsletters published in the USSR have now been added to my online archive :

(1) Digest UFOO i humanoid (Digest UFO and humanoid)
(2) Oko vselennoy - Vse pro UFO (Eye of the Universe)
(3) Ot zvezd letyaschiye (From the stars flying)
(4) Molodoy Communist - Zvezdy priblizilis (Stars approaching (Young Communist))

I have added searchable PDF copies of these items to the USSR folder in my online archive hosted on the website of the AFU.

PDFs - Robert Bigelow's NIDS - Batch 1 of research material added to archive (with greenlight from Robert Bigelow / Colm Kelleher, Eric Davis, Hal Puthoff and Jacques Vallee)

I know it's terribly old-fashioned of me, but I do try to be fair in discussions about UFO research. So, although I've been critical of Robert Bigelow in the past for not sharing as much material with the UFO community as I'd like (click on the screenshots below for relevant discussions...), I thought I'd respond to some unfair criticism I've seen of Bigelow recently suggesting that he has never shared any research material.

It simply isn't accurate to say that Bigelow has never shared any research material.

Bigelow and his various entities (including NIDS, the "National Institute for Discovery Science") have shared _some_ material over the years with the public. Not as much as I'd like (far from it...), but _some_.

Firstly, in 1998, Robert Bigelow's NIDS funded the publication of some UFO research. In particular, NIDS published the book "Best UFO Cases - Europe" by Illobrand von Ludwiger (the founder of the Mutual UFO Network - Central European Section, MUFON-CES). I added a copy of that book to my online archive recently, with the permission of Illobrand von Ludwiger thanks to help liaising with him from the German group IGAAP, particularly from Frank Schäpel). I also had an exchange of emails with Colm Kelleher (currently involved in Robert Bigelow's new Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies). During this exchange, I asked if he or Robert Bigelow had any objection to my objecting the book and very promptly obtained a favourable response. I also asked about some further NIDS material and again very promptly got a positive response which included "we are fine with you archiving it".

Secondly, Robert Bigelow's NIDS posted some research material on its website. That website is now defunct. However, snapshots of that website (and the documents uploaded to it at various points during its existence) have been preserved on the Wayback Machine's Internet Archive. The website was never particularly user-friendly, making it difficult to find some material, and the archived copy is even harder to navigate to some documents. So, I can understand why many people seem unfamiliar with it and I don't think I've seen most of the documents on it being mentioned or reposted elsewhere, even when relevant issues have been discussed.

To make it much easier to access to this material, I thought it would be useful to crawl the archive for documents using some software I've previously recommended, re-organise them a bit (e.g. giving them file names that are a bit more descriptive / helpful), render them searchable and and upload them all as searchable PDFs to my UFO archive hosted by the AFU. I asked Colm Kelleher if this would be okay with him and Robert Bigelow, and he replied that they had no objection. I also mentioned this upload during a recent discussion with Eric Davis, Hal Puthoff and Jacques Vallee (the authors of several of these documents). They both kindly indicated that they also had no problem with this material being added to my archive.

I'll continue my discussions with Colm Kelleher and others about uploading some further NIDS research, but in the meantime here is a first batch of material:

The quote above (“The most frequent complaint about Bigelow is that he gathers information, but will not share it”) is from the MUFON Journal, December 1998, page 19, in a review by Dwight Connelly of Roger Leir’s book "The Aliens and the Scalpel".

I think the criticism in the quote from the MUFON Journal is a tad unfair since Bigelow has in fact paid for the dissemination of _some_ UFO publications, so he clearly wants some information shared.

One common theme in comments on Robert Bigelow's personality is that he is pretty strong willed (not a rare trait in very rich people and possibly a necessary one in order to attain his level of success in business). It seems that he usually wants things done his way. If he is paying the bills, that doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me. Remember The Golden Rule? The person with the gold makes the rules. No-one is _required_ to share the results of their work.

However, it would just be desirable if more of Bigelow's material were shared, since this:
(a) may help the rest of us make more progress,
(b) may result in input to Bigelow from the rest of the UFO/scientific community which results in his team(s) avoiding errors.

Anyway, as I mentioned above, I'll shortly be seeking permission to upload further Bigelow/NIDS material.

PDFs: 70 issues of Norbert Gariety's "S.P.A.C.E." newsletter ("Saucer Phenomena and Celestial Enigma") - USA, 1957-1962

The final issue (Number 71) includes a brief history of the newsletter, including a discussion of some controversy in relation to the editor's reaction to "a distinct 'pink alien' color" among "many of the contact claimants", which led him to "introduce a pro-American - Anti-Communist format into the UFO news bulletin".  He recalled that this led to some subscribers that had succumbed to "brainwashing" demanding their money back and others cancelling their subscription because of his "right-wing - extremist views".

An editorial noted that the editor moderated a "one-hour Anti-Communism broadcast over Radio WMIE in Miami" each Sunday night and that dropping production of this UFO newsletter would allow him more time "to the full time job of awakening more Americans to the dangers this country faces".

70 of the 71 issues are now in my online UFO archive hosted on the website of the AFU, thanks to further collaboration with CUFOS (founded by J Allen Hynek) and particularly with George Eberhart and Mark Rodeghier.

I hope someone can supply the single missing issue (Number 33).

Rare 1950s UFOs newsletters (USA) : CSI New York ("best UFO periodical of its time"), "Flying Saucer Digest" and "Vimana" - CUFOS scans of 3 UFO newsletters added to archive

I've recently received some constructive suggestions for some collaborative efforts from CUFOS, the "Center for UFO Studies" founded by J Allen Hynek in relation to my UFO digitising project. George Eberhart and Mark Rodeghier have decided to allow me to upload their scans of various UFO publications (which have previously been on the CUFOS website, which is now undergoing a redesign).

(Coincidentally (??), I have also recently been spending a bit of time re-organising a lot of scans of documents and casefiles from the CUFOS archives, trying to put them into a more user-friendly and searchable format. I think I've found a way to automate this process, allowing the material in hundreds of files to become more easily accessible).

I've started with uploading searchable scans of the 3 newsletters below from the 1950s to the folder for UFO newsletters from the USA, due to the copyright position in relation to them. (I've previously posted some basic resources on copyright regarding material published in the USA prior to 1964).

(1) "Civilian Saucer Intelligence of New York" Newsletter (CSI New York)

Jerome Clark wrote in his impressive "UFO Encyclopedia" (2nd Edition, Volume 1:A to K) that CSI New York "was a significant presence on the UFO scene" and that "Though its membership was small, what the organization lacked in quantity it made up for in the quality of its personnel, who included such pioneering figures as Ted Bloecher, Isabel L Davis, and Alexander Mebane". Jerome Clark wrote that the CSI Newsletter was "the best UFO periodical of its time—well-edited intelligent thoughtful, and critical-minded".

(2) "Flying Saucer Digest" (ICARF)

This was the newsletter of the "Inter-Continental Aerial Research Foundation".

Although the name is the same, this is separate from the much larger later publication "Flying Saucer Digest" edited by Rick Hilberg - which I have previously uploaded with Rick's kind permission.

(3) "Vimana"

This was the newsletter of the "Detroit Flying Saucer Club". The cover for this newsletter stated "Vimana" is Sanskrit for "Boat of the Air".
